F.A. Cushing was the grandson of Howard Gardiner Cushing; who was a renowned portraitist. The Cushing Gallery at The Newport Art Museum was built in his memory; spearheaded by his good friend and fellow artist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. It houses a permanent collection of several portraits of his wife: Ethel, as well as a number of decorative works which occupied much of his later career.

Frederick A. Cushing after graduating from Harvard moved to New York and joined J.P. Morgan Bank in the commercial banking department. Later on he worked at Lehman Brothers in international finance, and was stationed in their Paris office for eight years.

Once he retired to the US, Fred worked in venture capital. Subsequently with his wife Caterine Milinaire they formed a video company out of New York and Newport producing various industrial videos for Museums, Tourist offices and nonprofit companies.

Fred's favorite occupation in Newport was to capture, with his brushes the light bathing serene landscapes and seascapes in oil paintings. With no formal art training but constantly exposed to his grandfather's work and surrounded by the exceptional beauty of Newport, it inspired him to try to capture these images in oil and watercolors.
