FINNEY, Humphrey S.

Mr. Finney, (1903-1984) a native of Manchester, England, arrived in New York in 1921, at the age of 18, and soon became involved in the horse-breeding business. He exhibited draft horses in Michigan, groomed polo ponies in Cincinnati, procured horses for the Coast Guard during World War II and became a horse auctioneer.

He became chairman of Fasig-Tipton in 1968, when his son John succeeded him as president of the company, which conducts auctions at many locations in the United States and Canada.

Bertram Robert Firestone (August 18, 1931 – July 12, 2021) and Diana Johnson Firestone (born January 26, 1932) of Newstead Farm in Upperville, Virginia were major owner/breeders of Thoroughbred equestrian and flat racing horses. They were voted the 1980 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner and in 1982 were inducted in the Virginia Thoroughbred Association Hall of Fame. They are former owners of Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park in Florida. Their Genuine Risk was known for winning the 1980 Kentucky Derby.
