The author's memoirs describe her precocious childhood as the daughter of Edward VIIs mistress, her European travels, her friendship with Cocteau, Proust, and others, and offer a literary and social portrait of Europe between the wars

The autobiography of Violet Trefusis, in which she relates a life that straddled the English Channel, taking in both French and English society. Violet is chiefly known as the daughter of Alice Keppel (mistress of King Edward VII) and the lover of Vita Sackville-West. As a writer of fiction and non-fiction she is less well-known. Philippe Jullian's illustrations add considerable charm to this autobiography, and the book is scarce with his dust jacket.
